Kagaku no Koshien, created by JST in 2011, has teams compete in written events (science, mathematics and informatics, including cross-disciplinary problems) and hands-on events testing making skills and communication. Written events use teams of 6; hands-on events use teams of 3-4. The winning team receives the MEXT Minister's Award and is sent to Science Olympiad in the USA; top teams are also recognized.
