Students submit experiments, research or surveys done individually or jointly (school research projects are allowed) in seven fields: physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, interdisciplinary, information/technology and applied mathematics. Each prefecture selects representatives for the junior high and high school divisions; 40 projects reach the central final with face-to-face judging. About 6 million yen in research encouragement money is awarded (500,000 yen for the Prime Minister's Prize, 300,000 yen for the MEXT Minister's Prize). Selected high school division winners represent Japan at ISEF in the USA, and top winners have gained eligibility for school-recommendation or comprehensive admissions at several universities.
