JSEC (started 2003) invites independent science, technology and mathematics research in 21 categories, from animal science and chemistry to robotics, embedded systems, behavioral and social sciences, and mathematics. Experts review entries in document rounds; finalists present at a final judging event. Several winners from the small-team division (1-3 students) are sent to ISEF as Japan's representatives, with pre-departure training for English presentations. Many universities recognize JSEC results in comprehensive-selection admissions.
