A Government of India scholarship of Rs 12,000 a year for talented students from low-income families, awarded at Class 9 after a state selection test and continued up to Class 12. Selected students apply on the National Scholarship Portal.
Run by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, to reduce drop-out after Class 8. About 1,00,000 fresh scholarships a year are shared among States and UTs. Each State/UT conducts a test with a Mental Ability Test and a Scholastic Aptitude Test (90 multiple-choice questions each) in Class 8. Awardees receive Rs 12,000 a year (Rs 1,000 a month) from Class 9 up to Class 12, paid by direct benefit transfer.
