What you’ll need

First team of an approved US-state/DC school assigned to an in-person regional
Four or five same-school grade 9–12 students, birth May 4, 2007–April 29, 2017 inclusive
One team/regional per student, at most four high-school years; no community clubs
School-approved 21+ coach; principal approval for nonemployee coach/co-coach
Homeschool proof and assigned-region residence boundaries if applicable
Approved school preregistration, complete student data and electronic parent consent/media release
Submit Team 1 by November 23, 2026, 23:59 local for reserved place; obey any earlier regional cutoff
If invited: eligible regional players, at least four for all nationals, group travel and full attendance

Overview

The U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl tests biology, chemistry, Earth/space science, energy, mathematics and physics through fast verbal toss-up and bonus questions. A school coach preregisters the school, obtains regional approval and completes the school’s first team by the reservation deadline. This entry covers the 2027 in-person regional route and first-team reserved-place process; virtual events and secondary-team lottery routes have different instructions and are not included. Teams compete at the regional assigned to their school; winning elsewhere does not qualify for nationals. An eligible regional-winning team can be invited to April 29–May 3, 2027 national finals in the Washington, DC area, with educational activities and compulsory full-schedule attendance. Invitation is competitive, not guaranteed by registration.
