Conduct coastal field and laboratory research with ocean scientists in a funded residential program for Maine high-school juniors.
Keller BLOOM (Bigelow Laboratory Orders Of Magnitude) immerses selected high-school juniors in ocean-science research with professional scientists at Bigelow Laboratory. Students learn sampling and data-collection methods, use oceanographic equipment on a research cruise in the Sheepscot River estuary, and investigate marine organisms and chemistry in the laboratory. Activities explore phytoplankton, zooplankton, pigments, nutrients, bacteria and marine viruses, with data collection, synthesis and analysis. Students present their research and experience to family and friends and discuss scientific ethics, policy and marine-science careers. Chaperoned housing is on Bigelow’s East Boothbay campus. The announced 2027 intake is upcoming; the exact 2027 participation dates are not yet published.
