A national invention contest co-hosted by MEXT, the Japan Patent Office, the Japan Patent Attorneys Association and INPIT, where high school, KOSEN and university students submit their own unpublished inventions. Winners file a real patent application with a patent attorney's support, with filing fees paid by the organizers.

The contest aims to build intellectual-property awareness. Entries are screened in three rounds (patentability and industrial applicability, prior art and feasibility, originality). Excellence Award winners receive support to file a patent application with the Japan Patent Office, guided by a patent attorney; special prizes include the JPO Commissioner's Award, the JPAA President's Award, the INPIT President's Award, a MEXT bureau director's award and a WIPO Award. Students may also enter the separate Design Patent Contest, but can win in only one of the two.
