A one-week residential 'be an astronomer' camp in which high school students from all over Japan form research teams, observe with the Sendai Astronomical Observatory's 1.3 m 'Hitomi' telescope, analyse their data and present results. Applications for 2026 closed on 18 October; the 2027 edition has not been announced.
Moshiten is run jointly by Tohoku University's Astronomical Institute, Sendai Astronomical Observatory and Miyagi University of Education, with sponsorship from the Astronomy Promotion Foundation and the Morimura Houmei Foundation. Teams set their own research question, take observations with the observatory's Hitomi telescope, analyse the data and present their conclusions to the public on the final day. Research by one 2025 team was later published in a journal (JAAVSO).
