Entrants up to age 14 compose a 2-4 minute string trio; those aged 14-18 compose a 4-5 minute string quartet. Entries must be inspired by Elgar's salon music (for example Chanson de Matin) and include a lyrical melody. They are judged by the festival's featured composer Adrian Williams.
