The National Tax Agency's annual Japanese essay contest, run since 1962, asking high school students what they think about the meaning and role of taxes. The 2027 (Reiwa 9) call has not been published yet.
Theme: 'What I thought about the meaning and role of taxes', e.g. experiences in society, tax news, turning 18, or what you learned in class. Essays of 800-1,200 characters. Prizes: 12 Commissioner of the NTA Awards plus Regional Taxation Bureau and Tax Office awards; in 2025, 173,021 essays came from 1,505 schools. Copyright of entries passes to the NTA.
