Japan's national statistical graph (data poster) contest, held since 1953 and backed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and MEXT. Students create a B2 statistical graph poster, enter it in their prefecture's contest, and prefectural winners compete nationally, with top works eligible for selection as Japan's entry to the ISLP International Statistical Poster Competition.
Divisions relevant to teenagers: Division 4 (junior high school, hand-drawn), Division 5 (elementary/junior high school, computer-made graphs) and Division 6 (high school and above, hand-drawn or computer). Works are judged on accuracy, completeness (data sources and survey methods), clarity of the theme and design, and how well the graph helps viewers understand the data. Awards per division: Special Selection (1), Selection (about 9) and Honourable Mention (about 20); the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Award and MEXT Minister's Award go to outstanding Special Selection works, which are also considered for Japan's entry to the ISLP International Statistical Poster Competition.
