A free Shimane University program in which high school students take an introductory research course, propose their own research and, once matched with a professor, carry out research in a university lab, with all research costs covered.
Kagaku no Takarabune is Shimane University's high school program under JST STELLA (60 places in 2026). Students can pursue research drawing on regional strengths such as tatara iron-making and materials science, ancient Izumo archaeology with scientific analysis, brackish-water ecosystems of Lake Shinji and Nakaumi, agricultural and marine resources, and elderly healthcare. Students have presented research abroad (e.g. in India and Taiwan). Sessions are in person or hybrid, with recordings available for remote students.
