SEES is hosted by the University of Texas Center for Space Research and funded by NASA as part of NASA's Science Activation program. Interns work on mission-based projects in areas such as aerospace, astronomy, planetary science, remote sensing, microgravity research and space geodesy, building skills in data analysis, engineering design and systems modeling. On-site interns live in UT Austin dorms with chaperones; virtual interns work from home with project mentors, and everyone presents at the Science Symposium. SEES evaluates both aptitude and need, and students with limited STEM access are encouraged to apply. The page notes that the program's continuation depends on future funding.
