What you’ll need

Read the entire 2027 Student Handbook and verify citizenship/school, university-enrollment and under 20-on-July 21 eligibility.
Student NACLO account and 2027 registration; choose an admitting registered US venue and permitted session.
Declare one intended national IOL team; notify NACLO before Open Round if also entering another national qualifier.
Under 13 participants need parental permission and guardian-email registration; request any accommodations early.
Bring black pen or dark pencil; use only the organizer’s blank paper and submit scratch work separately.
Work individually; no notes, books, calculators, phones or other electronics except basic watches. Report medical devices beforehand.
Attend the assigned site and follow host instructions; approved virtual exceptions are not a general online option.

Overview

The three-hour Open Round uses reasoning puzzles about languages, writing systems and computational patterns. No prior linguistics, foreign-language or programming knowledge is required. The Jan 28 open contest identifies students invited to the harder four-hour round on Mar 18, 2027. Invitational scores and possible further assessments select eligible national IOL teams; selection is not guaranteed. This entry is for registered US venues chosen by the student, so no single city is assigned. NACLO does not offer a general online option in 2027; narrow homeschool and emergency exceptions need prior organizer approval.
