The first round has a reasoning paper with Bebras-style interactive questions and a programming paper (C11, C++20, PyPy3, Java 17) with real-time automatic grading and partial scores. It is taken from home in a quiet room, with one device for the contest and a second device with a camera running Zoom for proctoring. Awards are given nationally and by region for primary and middle school divisions, and for all entrants and general high schools in the high school division. Bronze award winners and above advance to the second round.
