YIP was launched by the Government of Kerala in 2018 and conceptualised by K-DISC to build innovation skills such as critical thinking, creativity and collaboration through design thinking and root cause analysis. Students address real-world problems from government and institutional sources across 27 themes (agriculture, water, health, AI, space, fintech and more). The YIP site lists grants of ₹25,000 for each district-winning team and ₹50,000 for each state-winning team, and says the 2025 edition (YIP 8.0) drew 4,82,738 registered students.
