A merit-based, renewable scholarship of the Kerala State Higher Education Council for students who have passed Plus Two and join the first year of a non-professional undergraduate course (basic sciences, humanities and social sciences, business studies) in a Kerala government or aided college or university.
Introduced in 2009, the scheme selects about 1,000 first-year undergraduates every year (the Council proposes to raise this to 1,200) on merit within categories. The scholarship is renewable through the degree and, if standards are kept, into postgraduate study. More than 25,000 fresh applicants compete each year and about 4 per cent succeed. The guidelines on the official page (2015-16 edition) set category-wise minimum Plus Two marks and an increasing annual amount from ₹12,000 in the first year of the degree.
