A national essay contest on the United Nations for junior high school students, co-organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Association of Japan; the four special-award winners visit UN Headquarters in New York the following spring. The 67th (2027) call is expected to open around June 2027.
Junior high school students write essays on themes about the United Nations and Japan's role in the world (2026 themes included Japan's mission after 70 years of UN membership and whether the UN is needed in a divided world). Awards include the Minister for Foreign Affairs and MEXT Minister awards; the four special-award winners are sent to New York the next spring to visit UN Headquarters.
