Space Koshien 2027, Balloon Division (宇宙甲子園 気球部門)

High school and KOSEN teams build equipment that works in the stratosphere (about 30 km up), fly it on a balloon to photograph the Earth and carry out their own missions. Six teams are chosen by mission-plan screening for the national final. The 2027 cycle has not opened yet.

Space Koshien's Balloon Division is described by the organisers as the world's only annual balloon competition of its kind. Teams design instruments that survive the low temperature, low pressure and strong UV of the stratosphere, photograph the curve of the Earth, and run measurement missions such as temperature, pressure or radiation. Top teams can join the International Space Balloon Summit (ISBS), held in Mongolia since 2024.
