A free summer program that sends about 20 Japanese high school students to the United States as "high school diplomats" for a Washington, D.C. tour and an exchange with American students at the University of Virginia. The 2027 call has not been published yet.
Running since 1987, AIG High School Diplomats sends Japanese high school students to the U.S. each summer. After a tour (in 2026: Washington, D.C.), they join the same number of American students for an exchange part (in 2026: at the University of Virginia). Selection is by documents and essay, then interviews in Japanese and English plus group work. Participants prepare a presentation introducing Japan and work on their English before departure.
