Toyo University's annual tanka (31-syllable poem) contest, running since 1987, for poems expressing students' everyday outlook and feelings; 100 winning poems are announced each January. The 41st call has not been published yet.
Theme: tanka capturing 'how today's students see things and live'. Any number of poems may be submitted but each person can win only once; 100 poems are selected (plus 10 in the primary division) by a committee of Toyo faculty and professional poets, and schools with many strong entries receive a School Special Award. In the 39th contest there were 55,344 entries.
