Shankar's On-the-Spot Painting Competition is a flagship live art event begun in 1952, organised by Children's Book Trust (founded 1957 by the cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai) as an extension of Shankar's International Children's Competition. Children are seated in three age groups (5-8, 9-12 and 13-17 years). The best entry gets the Shankar's Memorial Gold Medal; the next two get the Children's Book Trust Gold Medal and the Children's World Gold Medal; other prizes and Certificates of Merit follow. In January 2026 there were 152 medallists and 320 merit certificates.
