Japan's national biology olympiad: an online theory preliminary followed by a 4-day lab-based final camp, which selects the Japan team for the International Biology Olympiad. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet.
The preliminary is a 90-minute theory exam taken online from home (camera monitoring is used), and about 80 students advance to the final. The final is a 3-night, 4-day camp with lab exams modelled on the International Biology Olympiad, plus research experiences and exchange with biologists. About the top 10 win gold, the next 10 silver and the next 20 bronze. About 12 top students in high school grade 2 or below become team candidates, receive special training and take a selection exam, and 4 are sent to the IBO. JBO issues a certificate of preliminary results, and some universities use JBO results in admissions.
