The National High School Cultural Federation invites high school students to design the official poster for the 2027 Tokyo gala performance of top schools from the All Japan High School Cultural Festival; winning designs become the event poster and programme.

A free Minecraft town-building contest co-hosted by JAXA for children up to junior high year 3: recreate the Keio rail line area (Earth category) or design a future city and mobility on the Moon using JAXA's LUNARCRAFT world (Luna category). Entries close 15 January 2027.

Rikkyo University's pre-entry grant of JPY 500,000-800,000 a year for up to four years, for students from high schools outside the Tokyo area with a GPA of 3.5 or above and limited household income. Round 2 applications are accepted by post from 7 to 18 January 2027.

Waseda University's pre-approved scholarship for academically strong, financially constrained applicants from high schools outside the Tokyo area: candidates are approved before the entrance exam and receive JPY 450,000-700,000 a year for four years if they enrol. Round 2 web applications run from 15 December 2026 to 19 January 2027 (23:59).

A free national contest, run since 2021 by the education company CURIO SCHOOL, where junior high and high school students submit the inquiry (tankyu) projects they did at school in either a 'things I love' or a 'problems around me' theme, with finalists presenting in Yokohama.

A government-backed, non-repayable study-abroad scholarship for high-school students in Japan who design their own inquiry-based study-abroad plan of 14 days to one year. Applications go through the student's school; the school must submit to JASSO by 21 January 2027.

The Japan round of the FAI international young artists' aviation painting contest: children and teenagers living in Japan paint an A3 picture on the theme 'My first International Day of Air Sports', and the top Japanese works go on to the international contest.
