Kagaku no Koshien Junior lets junior high school students represent their prefecture and compete as a team in written events (science and mathematics problems linked to daily life and society, teams of 6) and hands-on events (making and communication tasks, teams of 3). The winning team receives the MEXT Minister's Award and top teams are recognized.
