Program

A national competition in which junior high and high school teams build model rockets that carry a raw egg to a target altitude and flight time and bring it back unbroken. Regional qualifiers lead to the national final, and top teams can go on to the International Rocketry Challenge.

A free international computational-thinking and informatics challenge for elementary grade 3 to high school students, run in Japan by the Japanese Committee for IOI. Schools register by 9 November 2026 and hold the 40-minute online contest between 16 and 28 November 2026.

Japan's national tournament for impromptu (parliamentary) English debate for high school teams, held at the University of Tokyo and on Zoom. The top schools are invited to the PDA World Congress 2027.

Chuo University's grant for academically strong applicants from outside the Tokyo area: the award is decided before entrance-exam applications and pays half of tuition each year for four years after entry. Applications by post are open until 11 November 2026 (postmark).

The national championship of HEnDA-format English debate for high school teams, held at Chuo University's Tama campus in Tokyo. Schools qualify mainly through their prefectural tournaments and then register online by 11 November 2026.

A non-repayable JPY 50,000-a-month scholarship for outstanding female students who want to enter the University of Tokyo, selected before the entrance exams on the principal's recommendation. Applications via the high school principal must arrive by 13 November 2026.

A national design competition for high school students in six categories, from graphics and illustration to product, space and fashion design; entry is online.

A 9-day winter study trip to Cambodia with peace education in Phnom Penh, a rural village homestay, a primary-school exchange and New Year's Day at Angkor Wat, open to junior high and high school students (and others from grade 3 to adults). Applications are open until 13 November 2026.

High school students present forest-related research and hands-on activities as posters at the Japanese Forest Society's annual meeting in Okinawa, with awards for outstanding posters and free participation.

A government contest from Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in which teams of 1-3 junior high or high school students research a Japanese energy issue and present it in any format. Five junior high and five high school teams are selected for the national final in Tokyo on 6 March 2027.

A book-talk competition in which each presenter introduces a favourite book in 5 minutes and the audience votes for the 'champion book'. The Tochigi winner earns a place in the national high school Bibliobattle final in Tokyo on 7 February 2027.
